University of the West of Scotland

The University of the West of Scotland operates from four campuses near Glasgow. They are located in the towns of Paisley, Ayr, Hamilton and Dumfries. Paisley, Hamilton and Dumfries are located approximately 10 minutes out of Glasgow by train, Ayr campus is 40 minutes out of Glasgow.



Student Mix and Courses

The university holds over 18,000 students of which approximately 1,300 are international students spread across four campus sites. Each campus has a variety of degrees. Courses have a strong career focus as well as a flexible schedule for part-time students who are employed. In addition to academic courses, the university offers career advice through the employability link as well as paid placements incorporated to particular degrees.

Student Facilities 

Student Facilities such as library and computing are well equipped. Wi-Fi spots are available throughout the campuses and in university accommodations. In 2012, Paisley campuso pened their new accommodation in Storie street. It is located right next to the university, offering quick access to campus. Students unions are available on every campus. Ayr union offers a variety events including comedy, music. Paisley union has a bar on the top floor and has a 450 capacity venue for games and other weekly events. Hamilton union has a bar and provides a variety of entertainment programmes. Dumfries campus has a bar on campus and is in close proximity to recreational activities.

Glasgow University

Overview and Student Mix
Glasgow University is one of Scotland’s four ancient universities being founded in 1451 and located in Scotland’s second biggest city. Glasgow University is known for its rigorous academic courses and is often ranked in the top 100 universities. The University offers a high variety of courses in academic areas such as law, medicine, arts, science and engineering, and many more. Glasgow university currently has over 23,000 undergraduate students enrolled and approximately 6,000 post graduates.
Campus Location
Since 1870 the main campus is located in the west-end of Glasgow in Gilmorehill. The University’s main building is known for its incredible architectural design as well as being part of the filming of the famous Harry Potter movies. Furthermore, Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest student city and also future host of the 2014 Commonwealth games. The unique university location allows students to be part of a major city that offers a variety of events.

Sports
First class sport facilities are available at the university campus. some examples of facilities offered: swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms, fitness, large multipurpose hall, tennis courts and more.
Students’ Union
Glasgow University offers a choice between two unions students can join both with different characteristics: Glasgow University Union and Queen Margaret Union. The Queen Margaret Union is known for its live music performance events. The Glasgow University Union is more academic orientated and has held the world debating title and the Observer mace.

University of Edinburgh

Overview

The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1582. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and one of the biggest cities in Scotland. There are excellent transport links between all major cities and is only 45 minutes away from Glasgow by train. Edinburgh has been voted “Favourite UK City” for the past nine years. It is a great city to visit or live there as a student as the city itself, just like Glasgow offers a high variety of events.



Student Mix and Courses

The University currently holds over 26,000 students, 71% of those are undergraduates and 29% are post graduates. A typical undergraduate degree takes four years. The university offers a wide variety of diverse course programmes. The university of Edinburgh is a highly regarded qualifications institute.

Students union and Sports

The Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA) is run by students for students. EUSA offers a variety of services to students, offering free and confidential advice and support over 200 student societies. EUSA also runs one of the largest city’s nightclubs with a capacity of over 1,000, and a state of the art sound and lighting system. Teviot, the largest union building has five bars and seven floors offering stand-up comedy, pub quizzes, and more.

Edinburgh University has highly accredited sports facilities. The British Universities and Colleges Sports Association ranked Edinburgh in their top five. Facilities include state of the art gyms, fitness centres, outdoor centre, swimming pool, extensive playing fields and a sports injury clinic. The Sports Union also enters more teams than any other university.

  1. Bonjour (je vais faire ça en français :) Déjà félicitation pour ce blog, il est vraiment très complet, bien fait, et très pratique (tout cela est rassurant sur la vie en Ecosse) ! Je suis étudiante à l'iut d'Aix en Provence, et j'ai fais une demande pour étudier à UWS pour l'année 2013-2014 . Je voulais juste savoir quand vous aviez eu la réponse pour votre admission (quel mois ?), car personne n'a pu nous renseigner, et nous attendons avec impatience un petit signe . Et aussi, quand est-ce-que vous avez commencé les démarches de bourse !
